Frngeprints are patterns created by the elevation of pores in lines. We call the elevated lines that formthe fingerprint the ridges, and the lowered parts in between the ridges are called the valleys. The shapes made by the ridges create a number of points, which are known by different names. The point where a ridge breaks is called an ending point, and the point where a ridge divides into two is a bifurcation point. Two other special points are the core and the delta. The core is the point with the most variant changes in the directions of the lines, and the delta is the point where the ridges spread into three directions. Fingerprints are created in the inner skin, beneath the outer layers of skin, and do not change unless a person's inner skin is damaged. |

History and Development of Fingerprint Recognition
In 7,000-6,000 BC China and Assyria, fingerprints were already being used for identification purposes. At that time, porcelain makers left their fingerprints as a stamp on their creations to identify their assets. In China, clay seals of the thumbprints of the writers are often found with ancient texts. The fingerprint recognition thchniques that emerged in the early 1900s were generaly used for criminal investigations. At this time, prints of all 10 fingers were required, and were taken using special ink and a card with 10 boxes. In the late 1960s, the Live-Scan system was developed to record fingerprints electronically. This was a great innovation in the fingerprint recognition industy. Databases holding countless numbers of fingerprints were created, and technologies were constantly being developed to search the databases and find matching frngerprints. Withe the development of computer? based communication in the early 1900s, fingerprint recognition technology has been applied to a greater range of purposes. |

As fingerprint recognition technology develops, it is expected that more affordable and more portable fingerprint recognition devices will become available, and finger-print recognition will be considered a safe and convenient personal identification system.
